at the beginning complete panic. people were screaming. saw children crying. >> i mean the firing did not stop. shooting just continued but his body language was like, i'm getting it. that was his body language. i'm here, to do something. >> imagine the fear. witnesses describing panic and chaos at los angeles international airport today after a man shot his way through a security check point. a tsa officer was killed

and six other people have been wounded. good evening. police say there was only one gunman and the man is now in custody. take a look. this is the rifle at accused killer used. police identified him and he now lives in los angeles he was shot multiple times in the chest. he is in critical condition right now. and these are images from inside of the terminal. people ran, some hiding in bathrooms just to get away. passengers who had cleared security rushed on to tarmac, others locked down in restaurants and lounges. >> thousands of fleets still delayed at lax. and across the country because it's a major hub. air traffic affected nationwide. faa grounding flights and diverted others in the air this, is a story we first broke on twitter. it happened in terminal three,

virgin america's terminal on northwest side of lax. abc7 news joins us live in the newsroom falling latest developments. leanne? >> reporter: according to police the gunman was wearing fatigues and inside of his bag was a note that said he wanted to kill tsa officers and pigs, referring to police. this is the first tsa agent killed on duty. witnesses say the suspect entered terminal three around 9:20, pulled out an assault rifle and began shooting. >> body language was like, i'm getting it. i'm, i'm here to do something. he just grabbed a rifle like, he knew how to grab a rifle. >> people dropped to the ground or ran, as more shots were fired. >> all hell broke loose because people were pouring onto the tarmac. >> shooting started outside and continued in the screening station, where passengers show

their ids and boarding passes. >> he proceeded up into screening area. where screeners are and continued shooting, past the screeners and back into the airport itself >> two tsa agents were shot. one seen here, as crews raced to put anymore an ambulance. he died. the second officer shot in the hand. the shooter had an a.r.13, and he was shot by law enforcement. >> lasd transported six patient to the hospitals. >> all terminals at lax put into lock down. this shows some kind of rifle on the ground. officers searched the airport to see if others were involved. >> we believe at this point that

there is a lone shooter. >> reporter: all planes were ground and abc news is reporting one man was waiting with shoes off to be screened when the gunman approached him and asked him if he was with the tsa. the man shook his head, no. and the gunman moved on. in the newsroom, abc7 news. >> thank you this, is a look at the suspect's family home in southern new jersey. the police chief says he texted his family sometime before the shooting saying he might kill himself. new jersey police asked officers to check on him. lapd twoent his apartment, his roommate said everything seemed fine. around the time of the shooting before being identified, lapd officers reported back to new jersey police that he seemed to be okay. >> now taking you tloif los angeles. there is a news

conference just getting started with lapd and mayor. >> first, our thoughts and prayers are today with the families and fallen. an attack like this tests our resolve. it's a tremendous testament that today, a day that started with tore rific attacks is now ending with los angeles international airport beginning to reopen. a gunman opened fire in terminal three, killing a tsa agent. the first to die in the line of duty, and shooting two other people, one of which was a tsa agent. additional individuals had minor injuries and have been treated. airport police officers

opened fire, wounded him and took him into custody the suspect identified as paul, anthony ciancia, a resident of los angeles. right now, lax terminal with exception of terminal three is reopening as quickly as possible. passengers should check with airlines for flight information. first priority is safety. i know there is pressure for the public to get on that plane to feel secure. the area around lax should be avoided unless you have clear information on the flight and need to be in the area. we have a hot line for travellers needing a hotel near lax. they should call

1-888-831-7176. one of the lessons is september 11thth is the need to work seamlessly across jurisdictions. we had the fbi director here today before knowing this was going to happen. i witnessed, as mayor of the city, seamlessness between agencies, between different levels of government. i personally want to thank each of the men and women across agencies that today have done incredible work. i want to t volunteers and staff at los angeles world airport, red cross, civilian team that's stand out and ensuring traffic is flowing. now, i'd like to

give it over to the special agent in charge to say a few words. >> thank you. first off, i'd like to thank the media for your patience. this is a large-scale investigation. >> we're running into technical difficulty was the chopper in los angeles interfering with that news conference under way. and the mayor explained two people were shot in addition to tsa agent killed. and there were minor incidents as well. >> let's listen now and see if we have the audio back up. >> we're investigating his background and more about him. i'm not going provide much about

that at this point. the deceased identity is not going to be confirmed out of respect for families. families going through a difficult time but we're going to confirm it was a tsa employee actually deceased in this case.. there is one additional tsa employee wounded by gunshots. there are additional injuries, some of which seem to be potential injuries where they may have injured themselves trying to get away. at this point, we have one shut down and will have for a while, while we continue the investigation. forensic teams are in there from the fbi as well as lapd. their work is long and methodical. they'll take their time on this to be complete in the investigation. we do have a tip line i'd like to pass out. it's an fbi tip line.

9:30 this morning and approximately 3:00 p.m this afternoon, there were about 746 flights that were affected. 46 of those diverted to other local airports. the rest held on the ground here at lax or at their originating airports. we are glad to report that terminals 1 and 2 are now in the process of repopulation. employees first, tsa employees, airline employees in place, then passengers aloud back into terminals. terminal three remains closed for the time being. any folk who's have flights tomorrow, with the airlines that operate out of terminal three should contact the airline for information. we expect to be operating those flights but probably through a

busing procedure at remote gates we'll also on lax twitter feed provide as much information as we understand what operations will be for the flights. faa national ground stop on arrival for lax. it's scheduled to be lifted at 4:00 p.m today. lastly, just want to tell the public and travellers and all of those who are, um, intending to meet or bid travellers goodbye, thank you for your patience this, has been a trying day for everyone, i know. for those awaiting ariefing passengers we're going fwhus lot c. they should be there for pick up. i'm -- i want to reiterate the hotel hot line that is being provided by l.a.

tourism and convention board. that is passengers stranded at lax certainly encouraged to call that hot line for accommodations thank you. >> thank you. i say we have great coordination here today. it started long before the tragedy today. just three weeks ago there was training that went on with both airport police and los angeles police department on incidents just like this as shared earlier. tactics used today were practiced then, trained on by los angeles world airport police and i'd like to invite the chief of police to come back as well. >> thank you. just a couple things from my end, the officers

involved in this incident this, is a traumatic for anyone. no officers were injured but are doing well. the -- we take a look at a little bit of a time line. 9:22 is about the time we became aware that this incident occurred. airport police officers were on scene immediately and began to move after that particular individual. the suspect, as he proceeded through terminal three. they caught him, and caught up with him near the rear of the terminal. that is where the officer-involved shooting occurred. the, there has been information that we had made changes in security here at the airport. as it relates to officers assigned to our terminal . that is correct. we evaluate our deployment of

people, our strategies and tactics in dealing with individuals and with potential incidents like this. and in fact, many of have you probably travelled through an airport over the years and saw a police officer on a podium just behind the screening area. about a year ago, when i got here, i thought that our officers needed to be out in front of the screening area, rather than behind the screening area. so whatever information is out there regarding not having deployed enough officers that is not the case. more than enough officers have been aployed. our officers were supplied where they're supposed to be and performed heroically in this particular matter. it's a big job to get this place repopulated and people back on to their airplanes the information that gina
